"Niel’s Story"
Young Life met Neil when he was seven years old. The
unsightly facial deformity caused by the hare-lip made him shy,
suspicious, and bitter to the world. The psychological scars
from the teasing and ridicule was very much apparent as he
withdrew when we tried talking to him.
In the Center of the Philippine archipelago is a
historic island name Cebu.
This is the island were
Ferdinand Magellan the Spanish conquistador & first person to
circumnavigate the globe met his fate. Eighty-nine kilometers
southwest of Cebu City’s capital is a coastal town called Moalboal.

This seaside town is considered to be one of world’s best dive
spots and is frequented by many wealthy divers from all over
the world. Moalboal’s beauty is even said to rival that of the
Great Barrier Reef.

But not far from the playground of the wealthy lives a boy
named Niel Banogbanog. Like most of his neighbors who are
also impoverished; he comes from a large family of seven and
live in one room four square meter hut without a toilet or
running water. Access to clean water is a good one kilometer
walk.

Although he lives only ten kilometers from the town center of
Moalboal, a trip to his home can take an agonizing two during
the rainy season when road melts into mud.
